It is considerably slower than other types of RAM technology. Bubble memory is used in some computers in order to store data in between operating sessions – particularly in portable machines. This is referred to as volatile RAM, and has its own advantages and disadvantages. Other types of memory often do delete data stored in it when power to the machine is lost or cut off. This type of memory, named after the small bubbles that are formed, is non-volatile, which means that it isn’t deleted or lost when the machine is powered off. This difference can be used in order to represent digital data. This causes a slight difference between the bubbled and magnetized areas and the rest of the pane. A magnetic field is set up, and approached at right angles to the plane it is based on, materials form what is referred to as a bubble – a tiny circle. Bubble memory is a type of memory that uses materials that can only be magnetized in one direction, rather than two.
